What is a pom pom?
Poms are the decorative balls of hand held streamers that cheerleaders often use as visual props
Poms are also known as pompoms, poms, pom pons and pompons.
All the spellings ending in “n” are the offfical names, while the spellings ending in “m” are the more popular versions. All the names originated fron the French word :pompon”
It may come in many colours, designs and sizes and are made from a variety of materials.
Colours:
Pom pom colours are usually made in the school or team colours.
Matching the cheering uniform, the basic ones are usually in solid colours.
Coordinating or contrasting colours are also used to add variety in a pom pom;
Incorporate up to 3 colour mix.. Silver strands in a mix and must be with 1 or 2 colours and not on its own.. Cheerleaders also sometimes have different colours in each hand, to emphasize routines..
Size:
The most common size is about 50cm in diameter.. Junior poms is about 25cm in diameter.
Handles:
Standard.. It has plastic tube in the middle surrounded by plastic strings.
The strands and the tubing provide a great grip..
